Sheltering Arms is a safe haven where residents can maintain their dignity and self-respect while receiving comprehensive care. Our mission is to create a true partnership in caregiving, where the love and support of a family complement the specialize training and understanding of our staff. We strive to honor the lives of our residents as they lived prior to coming to Sheltering Arms. Our holistic approach is centered on the unique needs of each individual.
Sheltering Arms is a secure unit with a home-like atmosphere which enables residents to live within a protected environment. The unit contains seventeen private rooms and one double room as well as a dining/activity area and an outside patio. The unit is designed to provide a calm environment which is supportive and reflective of the people living here.
Programming is provided by staff trained to work with persons with dementia. Special attention is given to sensory awareness activities such as baking bread/cookies; attention to hair, makeup, and manicures; and music. Some other scheduled activities in the unit include visits by the day care babies, and weekly worship and Bible Study with Pastor Jeff.
Our staff excel at recognizing the unique needs of persons with dementia. We respect the individual resident's dignity in all areas - physical, psychological, spiritual, and emotional. We believe the key to providing excellent care is the use of consistent, specially trained caregivers who develop a level of familiarity and trust with the residents.
Each resident is as different as a snowflake. Our secret in caring for them is getting to know them so well that we learn to anticipate their needs, read their moods, and care for them accordingly. What works one time may not work the next - but, sharing this information with each other may be of help to the next person. We become their extended family. We need your input. You can help by telling us their special needs and maybe special techniques that you've used in caring for them at home. Definitely a TEAM effort.

Occupational therapy works to restore a person's ability to perform self-care skills such as dressing, grooming and bathing. Therapists work with residents to improve upper body strength and coordination, develop memory skills and improve motor skills.
Speech therapy works to improve communication and swallowing skills. Speech therapy is often needed following a stroke.
The goal of the short-term stay unit is to help people return to good health and to prepare them for a successful return home. This is done with the concerted effort of the patient, working together with their physician and the nursing, dietary and therapy departments here at St. John's.
